HERITAGE
The Cafe is situated in the grounds of Brough Castle or Verterae (Roman Name) which dates back to 1100 a.d and was built primarily to stop the Scots using the Eden Valley and the Stainmore Pass across the Pennines as an invasion route to the Vale of York. The Norman builders widened the Roman ditches of the southern part of the fort and the farm land surrounds the ancient monument itself. Visitors are welcome to browse the monument and grounds FREE OF CHARGE.
Whilst enjoying the Ice Cream you can also take a stroll to St Michaels Church which was built of sandstone in 1150 as a daughter church to that at Kirkby Stephen. Most of the church is 14th or 16th century.
On the floor near the stone pulpit is a tombstone in memory of Gabriel Vincent, Steward to Lady Anne Clifford who restored the Castle in the 17th century. He died in the Roman tower of the castle.
You can also view the extensive library of photos from the local area and enjoy the tranquility of the beautiful Church.
